ESKA Home

On behalf of the ESKA Executive Board we express our solidarity with the people of Ukraine at this very difficult time.

The Executive Board of ESKA met on Wednesday 13rd April 2022 and agreed with immediate effect the following suspension:

USKO Russia will be suspended from hosting or participating in any ESKA event. This includes members of USKO who serve on ESKA committees. This decision will be referred to the next meeting of congress for ratification and thereafter reviewed at intervals
    not longer than 12 months.

This decision takes into account the earlier decision of WSKA and the recommendation of the executive board of the International Olympic Committee that all International Sports Federations not invite or allow the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes and officials in international competition.

Our hopes and prayers are with the Ukrainian people and for an end to the death and destruction caused by the invasion of their country. We fully support the right of the Ukrainian people to live their lives peacefully within an
    independent European sovereign nation.

    Philippe Wattieaux

We report with great sadness that our friend Philippe Wattieaux has died.

Philippe was a great supporter of ESKA and WSKA as Director of the Belgian Amateur Karate Federation and for 36 years as an international referee.

Phillipe was an outstanding referee who championed the merits of Shobbu Ippon through his decisive actions and elegant gestures both on the tatami and in support of training younger referees and judges.

His contribution to both ESKA and WSKA will be greatly missed.

On behalf of the Executive Board we offer our sincere condolences to his family and friends.

    ESKA home

The European Shotokan Karate-do Association was founded in 1986 in Ghent, Belgium at the request of the member countries of the former European Amateur Karate Federation. ESKA is a fully democratic, non-political organization formed to foster and develop traditional Shotokan competition around Europe. ESKA championships are held every year at the end of November or beginning of December.

    ESKA Championship 2022 Winterthur, Switzerland

Thank you to all members who responded concerning their participation at this years ESKA championships in Switzerland. It was gratifying to see the overwhelmingly positive response despite the uncertain situation with COVID in many countries.

Unfortunately with COVID cases rising rapidly in Switzerland, along with hospitalisations, the Swiss government cannot guarantee access to Switzerland for all ESKA members. Once in Switzerland there are very strict and for some, very expensive protocols to follow. In addition there is the strong possibility of cancellation at short notice.

In these circumstances the ESKA Board has decided to postpone this year’s championships at this early stage in order to prevent members suffering the financial loss which may result from late cancellation. We understand that this is a great disappointment to competitors, coaches, referees and to the Swiss organising committee who have worked very hard for the past two years to plan this event however I hope that you understand that our priority is the safety of our members.

The future schedule of ESKA championships is:

    2022 – Winterthur, Switzerland – 2-4 Dezember (postponed from 2021)
2023 – San Fernando, Cadiz – November (date to be announced)
    2024 – Moscow, Russia (postponed from 2020)

It has been decided that membership fees will be suspended for a second consecutive year.

Also because congress traditionally takes place at a championship, the Executive Board has decided to postpone the ESKA congress until Dezember 2022.

We look forward to seeing you in 2022.
